Rory and Tiger Lose in Turkish Airlines World Golf Final

The world two highest ranking golfers Rory McIlroy and Tiger Woods both lost in the opening round of the recently held Turkish Airlines World Golf Final. Matt Kuchar won over McIlroy who hasn’t held a golf club since the Ryder Cup while Woods, on the other hand, lost to 2011 Masters Champion Charl Shwartzel by just a single shot.

World number one McIlroy fell from two-under to five-over after going triple bogey, double bogey, double bogey in the 15th to the 17th holes. The event was a medal match play where the lowest scorer in the strokeplay succeeds with a point. Though Kuchar also had bad shots, he was still able to close out the round with a score of one-under 70 leading by six strokes.

McIlroy, who had not seen the course prior to the match said, “I was playing pretty well until the 15th, then hit a loose tee shot there and was messing about in the trees and making seven. Then I hit it into the hazard on 16 and was just trying to get the round done. I lost a bit of concentration, went a few behind and gave up a bit.”

Woods, however, gave Schwartzel a tough fight after throwing birdies at the 16th and 17th holes but had a hard time in a bunker near the 18th hole where he recorded a bogey five. The game ended with a 69 to 70, in favor of Schwartzel. Woods, McIlroy, Kuchar and Schwartzel comprise the tournament’s Group One. Group Two is composed of Justin Rose, Hunter Mahan, Lee Westwood and Webb Simpson. Whoever emerges as Group One’s winner will eventually meet the Runner Up of Group Two in the semi-finals and vice versa.

Unavoidable Comparisons between Woods and McIlroy

Hearing the great names of Tiger Woods and Rory McIlroy of the golf world playing together will not prevent any golf enthusiast from comparing one to the other. This thing is predictable and unavoidable since these two men involved in The Barclays Bethpage Black event are golf’s long-reigning king and its prince.

The 23-year-old Rory and the 36-year-old Tiger both have mutual respects toward each other. Tiger speaks of Rory as, “There are a few guys that I’ve actually grown up playing against that once they get rolling, they get rolling… … … And I think that Rory has that ability, once he gets rolling, he just makes birdie after birdie after birdie — not afraid to keep trying to push it, to try to shoot lower scores.”

While the Rory on the other hand describes the Tiger as, “It really focuses you from the get-go, a pairing like that. I feel every time I’ve played with Tiger, he’s sort of brought the best out of me. I really feel focused and obviously want to play well.”

When Tiger was younger, he has that innate charm to make a complicated golf game look simple. McIlroy is turning out to be the same based on how he performed at the 2011 US Open in the Congressional and another in the recent PGA Championship held at the Kiawah Island.

Though tagged as each other’s rival, both are looking forward to play good golf with each other. One will surely score better than the other but whatever happens, Tiger is Tiger while Rory is Rory.
