Troy Merritt’s Comeback

Troy Merritt isn’t gone. He recently played at the Albertson’s Boise Open at the Hillcrest Country Club. The event is a charity shootout and is the first of the seven consecutive tournaments of the Web.com Tour lined up for the 2012 season.

Merritt was one those golfers who was believed to have great potential when he started two years back in the 2010 season. He scored 65 at the opening round of the Sony Open which was his first tour and ended the year with a score of 67 without bogeys at the Disney. He then won the $1 million Kodak Challenge in a heavy, sudden-death match versus Aaron Baddeley and Rickie Fowler.

He was doing well until suddenly, not anymore. He didn’t perform well enough in the 2011 season which dropped him in the roster of top players.

“You never know what’s going to happen in this game. One week can change everything. You’ve just got to roll with it and do your best, and unfortunately for me that means trying to keep my job for next year,” Merritt said.

Having a baby then moving to Phoenix without family or friends became tough for Merritt and interrupted his focus. Now, moving back to Idaho with his wife and 15-month-old son brings him on the right track and he now knows what to do. “I’ve got a lot of work to do. But one or two good weeks and you’re right back in the thick of things,” he said while carrying his son in his arm.
