McIlroy Keeps His Silence about Equipment Deal


Rory McIlroy's Contract
Heated rumors that world number one golfer Rory McIlroy is up for a new equipment deal keep on flooding the world of golf recently. Hearsay keeps coming out that the world renowned golfer is jumping out of Titleist in favor of Nike Golf.

To these, McIlroy says, “I have my management company deal with endorsements and everything like that. I’m just here to concentrate on golf this week, and I’ve got enough to think about trying to get that ball in the hole. So no further comment on that.” The golfer is playing at the BMW Masters in Shanghai, China. “These rumors have been going around for years, and it seems to always come up at this time of year,” he added.

Several reports also divulge that Nike is pursuing McIlroy for a 10-year exclusive deal which is also speculated to be worth around $250 million. TaylorMade was also reported to be after the two-time major champion. Though it is still not clear as to when the golfer’s contract with Titleist expires.

Both Titleist and Nike also keep their silence regarding the rumors. Titleist spokesperson says they do not talk about contracts with players while a Nike spokesperson said, “We are not going to comment on rumors or speculation.”
All these hearsays peaked up all the more when Nike’s Tiger Woods and McIlroy started having good friendship.

Golf Equipment that Revolutionized the Game


Golf technology has revolutionized the world golfers play in. Balls made of wound balata, persimmon wood clubs and shafts made of hickory can no longer be found in the golf courses and are just part of the sport’s history.

The most modern golf equipment nowadays is made by the biggest manufacturers of golf equipment. TaylorMade metal woods had been used long time ago but not until 1979 did it successfully hit the commercial market. Gary Adams and his team launched back then the Pittsburgh Persimmon driver. It was a stainless steel driver with a 120 cast that gave the golfers new perspective about drivers. Jim Simons used the Pittsburgh Persimmon when he won the Crosby Clambake in the 1982 PGA Tour.

The first Ping putter was invented by Karsten Solheim in 1959. Seven years after which, Anser putter was launched and is now the most renowned and frequently used putter design. Putters by Ping were used in over 500 winning professional golf tournaments in the different parts of the world. All these exclude other brands which used the derived designs from Anser.

The world’s most spoken-of golf ball is the Titleist Pro-V1 which was launched in 2000. The Pro-V1 changed the way golf balls are constructed. Its core was filled with liquid instead of wound rubber bands. This golf ball reaped an immediate success when Billy Andrade used the same ball when he won the PGA Tour on the same year. The Titleist Pro-V1 golf balls have been part of over 1,700 winning golf tournaments worldwide.

A Very Fitting Story at Mid Season


Kevin Tarsa, an editorial intern at Golf Digest, picked a golf club in 2009 by comparing the different ball flights produced by the clubs. He tried out a number of branded clubs at an outdoor range and chose the one he felt was the best.

Kevin was satisfied with his clubs, but he recently became interested in club fitting and the benefits it would offer his game. The spark of inspiration came from the many positive reviews he had seen about the process. He finally decided to try it out for himself. He put his familiar and well-used clubs to the test, wanting to find out if they were really the best clubs for him. He soon found out some surprising facts.

Through the use of a launch monitor, he learned that the ball was spinning too much. Woody Lashen, his club fitter, also noticed that the club shaft was not stiff enough.

After an hour, the perfect club fit for him was identified: a Titleist 910D3 head with an Oban Kiyoshi shaft. With the new club, ball spin was controlled but ball speed was faster.

Much to Kevin’s surprise, when he tested his new club on his favorite golf course, his game was totally transformed. The ball traveled smoothly and easily, even around hazards he used to fail in reaching. His usual problem of a left miss was also gone.

Kevin’s decision to visit Pete’s Golf for a club fitting led to an eye-opening experience. He promised himself that he would never buy golf clubs off the shelf again. He wished he had taken advantage of the technology and had the complete metal woods club fitting done years ago. A more confident Kevin Tarsa is now on the course, carrying his custom-fit clubs.

Titleist Balls 2012


Titleist has been making quality golf balls for many years. The company has recently launched upgraded versions of their NXT and DT Solo Series, while their new line, Velocity, enters the market.

Bill Morgan, Senior Vice President of Titleist Golf Ball Research and Development, describes the company’s older ProV1 and ProV1x golf balls this way: “It’s not just a tour ball. It’s a ball that can help everybody play their best.”

So what innovations can you ask for if the existing model is apparently all you need?

“Our research shows the importance of preferences when it comes to ball selection. Feel is a hugely important area – often in the long game as well as the short game.… And, of course, price,” Morgan expounds.

Titleist’s new NXT Tour is a dual-core ball designed with an outer high-energy portion for speed and a soft inner center to keep the spin rate down, which draws the ball 3 to 5 yards farther. It is also less expensive than the ProV1, at £34 per dozen.

Morgan describes the DT Solo’s new version as having the lowest compression of the Titleist family. It is also the softest DT ball, and probably the softest Titleist ball ever. It costs around £21 per dozen.

The all-new Velocity travels admirably, without the firmer feel associated with its pure distance rivals. It also has the fastest core, cover, and dimple pattern of any Titleist golf ball – while costing barely £28 per dozen. “All I can tell you is we have been warned! If there’s a longer ball out there, it’s over the line,” reveals Morgan, while keeping the number specifications confidential.
