Ernie Els Suffers from Ankle Injury

ernie els injuredWhether he likes it or not, The Open champion Ernie Els cannot join the PGA Grand Slam of Golf set to happen at the Port Royal Golf Club in Bermuda. The South African golfer is suffering from an injured ankle and will be replaced by Padraig Harrington for the 36-hole game.

This is sad news for the event’s organizers since PGA Champion Rory McIlroy already announced that he will not be joining the Grand Slam but instead, will play in the BMW Masters to be held in Shanghai. Keegan Bradley, last year’s PGA champion, is replacing McIlroy and will compete against Harrington, Masters champ Bubba Watson and US Open winner Webb Simpson.

Els shared that though his injury was not that bad, he was medically advised not to play in Bermuda. He said, “I am bitterly disappointed. It is a great reward for winning a major and something I have enjoyed in the past and was looking forward to again. Unfortunately I sprained my left ankle a few days ago and while it isn’t too serious and should recover relatively quickly, I have been advised not to try and play on it.”

Harrington, on the other hand, shared, “While my entry is under unique circumstances, I am excited to compete in the event again. I came close the last two times I was there, losing in play-offs to Angel Cabrera in 2007 and Jim Furyk in 2008, so maybe the third time will be a charm.”

More about Ernie Els

Ernie Els is known as a golfer with numerous achievements. Taking a deeper look at who he personally is, we will find him to be a well-rounded man far more than being a major champion.

Born and grew up South Africa, Ernie started playing golf at the age of 8. This former world number 1 has, so far, 69 worldwide wins. Among his four biggest championship wins were two US Opens in 1994 and 1997; and, two Open Championships in 2002 and 2012. He is one of the few golfers who have won twice in the each of the two major tours. He also topped the European Tour Order of Merit money list twice and winning the World Match Play Championship seven times.

Els started his Ernie Els and Fancourt Foundation in 1999 which aims to help deprived children. Since his son, Ben, was diagnosed with autism, he and his wife were actively devoted for such cause launching annual charity golf events to support a non-profit charter school and other projects for autistic children.

“Coming out publicly quite a few years now ago with Ben and the autism, it took a lot of work to get the foundation set up, the right people, and our mission statement. And we’re clear on that. People know where we’re going with that. Even the foundation itself knows where we’re going with that; we’ve got a clear goal,” Els stated.

“And with my golf life, also. The two are running parallel, but yet separate. And it’s a lot simpler than it has been. It took quite a bit of time to set it up. And I think emotionally or mentally I’m also in a better place than I have been in the last couple of years with the whole situation,” he shared.

Els is happier now in winning more and more events because this is what makes Ben happy. “I made a lot of putts today with Ben in mind today, because I know Ben’s watching. He loves when I hit golf balls. He’s always there. He comes with me. He loves the flight of the ball and the sound. I know he was watching today. I wanted to keep him excited today, so I made a lot of putts for him today,” said Els.
