The Barclays Hails Watney

Nick Watney didn’t give up this season even after a year of seemingly futile attempts. And, he reaped his harvest bagging the win at The Barclays held at a tough course Bethpage Black. The win gave him a $10 million prize plus a chance to play at the Ryder Cup.

It all came to pass when Watney gave good shots until the 16th hole, turning a two-shot behind into a three-shot lead against Sergio Garcia, overcoming bogeys with birdies and finally closing the game with a score of 2-under 36 and three-shot ahead victory against Brandt Snedeker.

“It’s been not quite the year I wanted. But this really makes it all forgotten. Winning a tournament is hard, but winning out here and against this field was very, very difficult. I’m kind of still on a high right now,” Watney said during the interview.

Snedeker is a strong contender in the British Open and played well until the end making big putts on the last two holes but came short to beat Watney on the side. The game closed with him at the second place scoring at 1-under 70.

Watney himself didn’t expect that he will be competing in the Ryder Cup and things would happen the way it did. “I’m thinking much more now than I was coming in. Coming in here, I didn’t deserve to be in the conversation because I had not played my way in. Someone told me that Davis said he wanted a hot player, and we still have a week to go. But like I said, I’d love to be on the team. But I’m not really concerned with it just because it’s out of my control,” he humbly confessed.
