Sergio Garcia and Nick Watney Talks about Bethpage Black

Bethpage Black is reputable because of its greens. Sergio Garcia described it as the only surface he recalls where you can putt fast while Nick Watney calls it an extreme course. Many golfers think that Bethpage Black is an unplayable ground especially in the recent Barclays tournament but Garcia had no problem with it.

Without any bogey in his last eight holes, Garcia was even able to come out with a two-shot lead from a three-shot lag with Watney finishing at a score of 2-under 69. Given such conditions of Bethpage Black, Garcia managed to be one of the final 18 scoring at less than 70.

Garcia shared, “The course is extremely firm. The greens, just probably some of the fastest greens I’ve ever played. Just one of those days where you knew it was going to be tough and you have to hold on very tight, and just kind of hope for the best.”

Without any record of PGA Tour wins for the past four years, Garcia has the opportunity to make two consecutive wins this season and return to the list of the world’s top 10 players.

Watney, on the other hand, had a hard time making five putts in just a 15-feet distance. He said, “The course just kind of beat you up.” his memorable shot was a 35-feet birdie on par-3 at the 17th hole.

The greens in the course just get harder and become firm as the day goes. Garcia noted, “It’s just we know what Bethpage Black is all about. We know it’s a tough golf course, and you’ve just got to realize that’s the way it’s going to be.”

And, that is why it is Bethpage Black.
