Lee Westwood Breaks Off with Coach

The former world number one Lee Westwood parted ways with long time coach Pete Cowen. Westwood will also have to have another caddie change to bring back the spark into his professional golf career. The change of caddie is the second time for this year after he was forced to let Billy Foster go when the latter had a knee injury last May.

Westwood’s manager, Andrew “Chubby” Chandler said, “Lee admits he needed to shake things up. He’d lost his focus and his enthusiasm a bit because he wasn’t getting the rewards for his long game. Parting company with Pete is because he’s passing on advice to Lee, but he’s not around to follow it through.”

He also added that Westwood is well organized going to the gym but not during practices. Cowen also works for Graeme McDowell and was with McDowell for two days at the time Westwood needed to work with him. Chandler added, “Lee’s the sort who needs someone standing over him, making him hit chip after chip and telling him what he’s doing wrong.”

When asked who the new one will be, Chandler teased, “I won’t say who it is, but it will become public next week because he’ll be working with Lee for a few days at The Barclays. All I’ll say is that it’s not one of the usual suspects – it’s someone a bit different. It’s an interesting choice.”

Ryder Cup captain Jose Maria Olazabal looks forward for a rediscovered Westwood at the upcoming tournament which the golfer has seven weeks to prepare for.
