Encompass brings Champions Close to Home

Encompass Insurance which is a company based in Northbrook, Illinois took over this year’s sponsorship of the Champions Tour. And guess what? The company formally announced that the golf tournament will be stationed in Chicago for the next three years.

This year’s Champions tournament is already set to be held at the North Shore Country Club in Glenview, Illinois. The company, however, decided to hold the event closer to their home base and they are geared towards the commitment to host the event in Chicago until 2015.

It was in 2002 when the Champions Tour was last held in Chicago. Formerly known as the Senior Tour, the event features golfers who are 50 years old and above. Among the most popular names in this tournament are Bernhard Langer, Tom Watson, Nick Price, Tom Lehman and Fred Couples. Just few seasons away from the 50-age-mark are Vijay Singh, Steve Elkington and Rocco Mediate. They are soon eligible and expected to play in time for the Encompass event.

Chip Beck, the 2011 Comeback Player of the Year in the Champions Tour and a resident of Lake Forest is all excited in bringing the event close to his home. He said, “We need to have a tournament here every year. We throw great events here in Chicago. Encompass is a solid Chicago company. They’ll involve the entire community.”

The Encompass Championship features an unusual component. The Champions Tour player will have partner-players including amateurs and celebrities for an event-within-an-event competition. Though the contract stands for only three years, Beck optimistically says, “I expect the tournament will be here long after I’m finished playing golf.”
