Golf Tourists Flock to Malaysia

Golf tourists have a new and exciting place to play their favorite game. That place is Malaysia.

The Malaysia Golf Tourism Association (MGTA) is working hand-in-hand with Tourism Malaysia to bring the biggest golf tournaments of the season. The events aim to draw the world’s awareness towards golf, and golf tourism, in Malaysia.

Maybank Malaysian Open is one of the most prestigious events staged by both organizations. Held last April at the Kuala Lumpur Golf and Country Club, this tournament cost around USD2.5M. It was a big hit and was composed of a strong line-up of champions. Michael Campbell, Todd Hamilton, Martin Kaymer, Louis Oosthuizen and Charl Schwartzel were the five major champions featured in this event. They were also joined by a lot of famous names from European and Asian golf tournaments.

Another huge event held in the same month was the Asia Golf Tourism Convention. It took place at the Palace of the Golden Horses. The convention was attended by more than a hundred golf tour operators from different parts of the globe. The event featured an in-depth look at the rich and varied golf tourism opportunities in Malaysia.

Chris Syer, Executive Director of MGTA, said, “Malaysia hosts quality tournaments. They have impressive golf courses with varied and unique landscapes. The country is beautiful and the people are nice.” He also said that Malaysia has huge potential for bringing in revenues from golf tourism.

With so much effort being put into developing Malaysia’s golf industry, golf enthusiasts are expected to embrace Malaysia as a tourist destination.
